To operate a fire extinguisher. Remember this simple acronym from the U.S. Fire Administration:

P.A.S.S – Pull, Aim, Squeeze and Sweep –

PULL the pin. Hold the extinguisher with the nozzle pointing away from you and release the locking mechanism.

AIM low. Point the extinguisher at the base of the fire.

SQUEEZE the lever slowly and evenly.

SWEEP the nozzle from side-to-side.

After the fire appears to be out, watch it carefully since it may re-ignite!

Although there are many different types of fire extinguishers. They all operate in a similar manner.  Just remember the P.A.S.S. Word.
